Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar of Destiny 2000 Ltd. became champion in the 28thBASIC Bank National Junior (Under-20 years) Boys & Girls ChessChampionship-2007, sponsored by BASIC Bank Limited and organised byBangladesh Chess Federation. Sagar earned total 8 points after end of the9th or last round games to clinch the title. 9th or last round games wereheld yesterday (Tuesday) in the last round Sagar beat Abdullah Al Saif.Shamima Akter Liza of Narayangonj became runner-up with 7½ points. Liza wassolo lead in the points table up to 7th round and sharing lead up to 8thround but in the last round she drew with Nurul Islam Mahin of Manikgonj. 4players earned 7 points each. Their positions decided by tie-breakingsystem. Abdullah Al Saif of Quality School & College became 3rd, NurulIslam Mahin became 4th, Mohammad Sagar became 5th & Rezaul Islam Babu ofRajbari became 6th. 3 players are earned 6½ points each. Their positionsare: 7th-Masum Hossain, 8th-Golam Sarwar and 9th-Moniruzzaman Emon. In thelast round Babu beat Sharif, Md. Sagar beat Siam, Sarwar beat Raju and Emonbeat Pavel. The event was held in 9 round Swiss-league system and total 102players participated.

After 6th round of the junior championship, Liza is leading the tournament. She scored 6 out of 6 to take the sole lead. In this round she beat Sharif who recently won Dhaka district championship with a score of 7 out of 7! This is another moment for the Bangladesh Women chess if this girl can win the Junior championship which was never won by any female player ever in our country. The other turning point of women chess of Bangladesh was when she won the sub-junior (under 16) championship two years back. She also won the women championship in 2005 at the age of 15 and this year she took the best women prize (jointly) in the strong Delhi GM tournament.She needs much more exposure to become a strong chess player.Tomorrow could be the deciding day of the tournament if she is to play against Sagar the very talented and number one seed of the touranment.

After the 5th round of National Junior Championship 2007, Liza and Sharif are sharing lead with 5 points each. The biggest upset of the event Sharif beat Sagar while the other favorite of the event Liza won against the talented Saif. Reportedly Sagar had a good position against Sharif but misconducted the attack and lost. In other game against Liza's paulsen, Saif tried to build a solid structure with white pieces but Liza's timely d5 break in the center shaken white's position completely and later Liza won the game without much trouble. Another Narayangonj girl Shirin is trailing by 1/2 points behind the leaders. 9 players are sharing 3rdposition with 4 points each.
