Pragati Insurance Open Rating Chess-2007

FM Abu Sufian Shakil of Destiny became unbeaten champion in the Pragati Insurance Open International Rating Chess Tournament-2007, organized by Leonine Chess Club, which was held at Bangladesh Chess Federation hall-room. Shakil earned 7½ points. National Junior Champion Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar of Destiny became runner-up with same points. Two players earned 7 points each and their positions are: 3rd-FM Mehdi Hasan Parag of Biman, 4th- Sohel Chowdhury of N.Gonj. 7 players earned 6½ points each and became 5th to 11th . They are: 5th-FM Kh. Aminul Islam, 6th-Mohammad Javed, 7th-Mahtabuddin Ahmed Robin, 8th-Md. Alamgir Hossain, 9th-Monir Hossain, 10th-FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman Emon, 11th- Md. Siddiqur Rahman. 10 players earned 6 points each and became 12th to 21st . They are: Arman Monir, Mizanur Rahman, Masuda Begum, S.A.M. Nasir, Md. Sharif Hossain, Mohammad Hafizul Islam Chapal, Md. Enayet Hossain, Aminul Islam Polash, Mohammad Shameem and Sawkat.Prize distribution ceremony was held yesterday (Saturday). Mr. A.K.M. Rafiqul Islam, Managing Director of Pragati Insurance Company Limited and former Minister Mr. Shafiqul Gani Sawpan distributed prizes among the winners. Capt. (Rted.) Imam Anwar Hossain, President of Leonine Chess Club presided the ceremony and former President of Bangladesh Chess Federation Mr. Syed Shujauddin Ahmed and Mr. Monjur Hossain Zimmu, General Secretary gave addresses in the ceremony.
Last round games were held yesterday. In the last round: Shakil drew with Sohel, Sagar beat Amin, Parag drew with Alamgir, Emon drew with Robin.

In the 8th round games: Shakil drew with Amin, Parag drew with Sagar, Sohel beat Arman, Emon beat Javed, Monir drew with Polash, Debaraj drew with Shameem, Robin beat Delu, Labu beat Mithu and Alamgir beat Chapal. 9th or last round games will start tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:30 AM at the same venue and Prize giving ceremony will be held on 4:00 PM.

Grand Master title for Abdullah Al Rakib!!


World Chess Federation (FIDE) has approved the Grandmaster title of National Champion Abdullah Al Rakib in the 3rd quarter Presidential Board Meeting of FIDE which was held in 13-14 September in Mexico city. FIDE Elishta (Russia) office confirmed his GM title yesterday (Tuesday) to Bangladesh Chess Federation by e-mail. Rakib is the 4th grandmaster of the country. Other three GM’s are: Niaz Murshed (got title-1987), Ziaur Rahman (2002) and Reefat Bin Sattar (2006). Rakib achieved his 1st norm from 2nd Aisan Individual Championship at Kolkata in 2001, 2nd norm from Leonine Chess Club GM’s Chess Tournament at Dhaka in 2004 and the final norm from Mercantile Bank 33rd National Chess Championship at Dhaka in 2007.

Leonine Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament-2007

Leonine Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament-2007, organized by Leonine Chess Club will start from 27th September, Thursday from 3:00 PM at Bangladesh Chess Federation hall-room. It is an open event for all chess players and interested players can enroll their name on or before 26th September, Wednesday at Bangladesh Chess Federation office. The event will be held in Swiss-League system and prize money will be given to the winners.
