Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007, Men & Women, Zone-3.2

GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India became unbeaten champion in the Men section of the Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007 for Men & Women, Zone 3.2, sponsored by Shadharan Bima Corporation and Habib Bank Limited and organized by Bangladesh Chess Federation which was held at the conference-room of National Sports Council. Ganguly earned 9 points to clinch the title. Indian IM G.N. Gopal became runner-up with same points. 11th or last round games were held (Yesterday) at the conference room of the National Sports Council. In the last round Ganguly beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal and Gopal beat IM Abdullah Al Rakib. Ganguly and Gopal both earned 9 points each after end of the 11th or last round games. Play-off match broke their tie by Rapid Chess format. Ganguly beat Gopal by 2-0 points in the play-off match. Ganguly is qualified for the 1st round of the World Cup Chess Championship, which will be held in Siberia in November. Indian G. Rohit became 3rd with 8 points. Gopal achieved an 11 games Grandmaster norm and Rohit achieved 9 games grandmaster norm from this event and it’s the 3rd or last norm for both players. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy of India became 4th with 7 points, International Master Enamul Hossain Razib became 5th with 6 points, IM Abdullah Al Rakib became 6th with 5½, GM Reefat Bin Sattar became 7th with 5½ points, FM Kh. Aminul Islam became 8th with 4½ points, Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan became 9th with 4½ points, IM Suvrajit Saha became 10th with 3½ points, Athula Russell became 11th with 2 points and Shrestha Keshav of Nepal became 12th with 1½ points. In the last round games: Deepan beat Russell, Rohit beat Kh. Amin, Tunveer beat Suvrajit and Razib drew with Reefat. Women Grandmaster D. Harika of India became champion in the women section with 7 points and WGM Swathi Ghate of India became runner-up with 6 points. The prize Distribution was held yesterday (Friday) at the same venue. Honorable Adviser Ministry of the Youth and Sport Mr. Tapan Chowdhury distributed prizes among the winners. Mr. Md. Abdus Salam Khan, President of Bangladesh Chess Federation and Secretary of the Ministry of Establishment of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh was presided the ceremony. Mr. Ilyus Ahmed , Managing Director of Sadharan Bima Corporation and Mr. Abdul Hayee, Vice President and Country Manager of Habib Bank Limited were present as special guests. Mr. Jamilur Rahman, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation gave address. Total Five thousand us dollars were given to the winners as prize money. Champion Ganguly and Runner-up Gopal got eight hundred fifty US dollars each. Rohit got five hundred dollars, Deepan got three hundred, Razib, Rakib and Reefat got two hundred dollars each, Amin and Tunveer got one hundred dollars each. In the Women section Champion Harika got six hundred dollars, Swathi got four hundred dollars, Tania got three hundred fifty dollars, Rani Hamid got two hundred fifty dollars and Shirin got one hundred fifty dollars. 12 players from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh including 3 grandmasters, 4 International Masters and 1 FIDE Master participated in the Men section and 5 players including 3 women grandmasters from India and 2 players from Bangladesh participated in the Women section.

Gopal and GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly are jointly leading with 8 points each after end of the 10th round games in the Men section of the Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007 for Men & Women, Zone 3.2, sponsored by Shadharan Bima Corporation and Habib Bank Limited and organized by Bangladesh Chess Federation. Gopal has achieved 10 games Grandmaster norm and Rohit 9 games grandmaster norm from this event. These are 3rd and last norm for the both players. 10th round games were held yesterday (Thursday). In the 10th round games Gopal beat Rohit and Ganguly beat IM Suvrajit Saha. All 4 Bangladeshi players won their 10th round games. IM Enamul Hossain Razib beat Indian Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy, GM Reefat Bin Sattar beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal, FM Kh. Aminul Islam beat Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan and IM Abdullah Al Rakib beat Russell M.K.A. of Sri Lanka. Women Grandmaster D. Harika of India became champion in the women section with 7 points and WGM Swathi Ghate of India became runner-up with 6 points. WGM Tania Sachdev of India became 3rd with 5.5 points, IWM Rani Hamid became 4th with 3 points and Sharmin Sultana Shirin became 5th with 0.5 points.
10th or last round games of women section were held Wednesday. In the last round Harika beat Swathi and Tania beat Rani Hamid. Points after 10th round in the Men Section: 8-Ganguly, Gopal, 7-Rohit, 6-Deepan, 5½-Rakib, Razib & Reefat, 4½-Amin, 3½-Tunveer & Suvrajit, 2-Russell and 1½- Keshav. 11th or last round games of the Men section will start today (Friday) from 10:00 AM at the same venue. In the 7th round games of Men Section Gopal drew with IM Enamul Hossain Razib, GM Reefat Bin Sattar drew with GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Rohit beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal, FM Kh. Aminul Islam beat Russell M.K.A. of Sri Lanka, IM Abdullah Al Rakib drew with IM Suvrajit Saha of India. In the 8th round games of Women section IWM Rani Hamid beat Sharmin Sultana Shirin and Swathi Ghate beat WGM Tania Sachdev of India. 9th round games of women section Harika beat Shirin and Swathi beat Rani Hamid.


Points after 7th round in the Men Section: 5½-Gopal, Rohit, 5-Ganguly 4-Deepan, 3½-Rakib, Razib, Amin, Suvrajit, 3-Gillani, 1½- Kh. Amin and 1-Keshav.

They are IM G N. Gopal, IM Suvrajit Saha of India and Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan. 4th round games of Men section and 4th and 5th round games of women section were held yesterday (Sunday) at the Conference-room of National Sports Council. In the 4th round games of Men Section Gopal beat Tunveer, Suvrajit beat Russell M.K.A. of Sri Lanka, GM Reefat Bin Sattar beat IM Abdullah Al Rakib, IM Enamul Hossain Razib drew with Shrestha Keshav of Nepal, GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India drew with G. Rohit of India, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy beat FM Kh. Aminul Islam. In the 4th round games of women section WGM D. Harika of India beat Sharmin Sulatan Shirin and WGM Swathi Ghate beat IWM Rani Hamid. In the 5th round games of the women section Rani Hamid played with WGM Tania Sachdev and Harika played with Swathi.

Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan is now leading the point table with maximum 3 points after end of the 3rd round games in the Men section of the Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007 for Men & Women, Zone 3.2, sponsored by Shadharan Bima Corporation and Habib Bank Limited and organized by Bangladesh Chess Federation . 2nd and 3rd round games were held yesterday (Yesterday) at the Conference-room of National Sports Council. In the 2nd round games Tunveer beat IM Enamul Hossain Razib, IM Suvrajit Saha beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal, G.N. Gopal of India beat GM Reefat Bin Sattar, Athula Russal drew with GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, FM Kh. Aminul Islam drew with IM Abdullah Al Rakib and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy drew with G. Rohit. The Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007 for Men & Women, Zone 3.2, sponsored by Shadharan Bima Corporation and Habib Bank Limited and organized by Bangladesh Chess Federation began yesterday (Friday) at the Conference-room of National Sports Council. 12 players including 3 grandmasters, 4 International Masters and 1Fide Master are participating in the Men Section and 5 players including 3 women grandmasters and 1 Woman International Master are participating in the women section. In the 1st round games: GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India beat IM Enamul Hossain Razib, GM Reefat Bin Sattar beat Ahthula Russal of Sri Lanka, IM Shuvrajit Saha of India beat FM Kh. Aminul Islam and Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan beat Shrestha Keshav. IM Abullah Al Rakib drew with G. Rohit of India, GM Deepan Chakraborty of India drew with G.N. Gopal of India. In the women section WGM D. Harika of India beat WGM Tania Sachdev of India and WGM Swathi Ghate beat Sharmin Sulatan Shirin.2nd and 3rd round games will held today(Saturday) at the same venue.

Round 3 games(will start at 3.30PM on 25.08.2007): Srestha Keshav vs Kh Aminul Islam,Hossain Enamul vs Suvrojit Saha,Russel M.K.A vs Gillani Tunveer M.D,Gopal G N vs Ganguly Surya Sekhar,Rohit G vs Reefat Bin Sattar,Abdulla al Rakib vs Deepan Chakkravarty.
