Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007, Men & Women, Zone-3.2

GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India became unbeaten champion in the Men section of the Asian Zonal Chess Championship-2007 for Men & Women, Zone 3.2, sponsored by Shadharan Bima Corporation and Habib Bank Limited and organized by Bangladesh Chess Federation which was held at the conference-room of National Sports Council. Ganguly earned 9 points to clinch the title. Indian IM G.N. Gopal became runner-up with same points. 11th or last round games were held (Yesterday) at the conference room of the National Sports Council. In the last round Ganguly beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal and Gopal beat IM Abdullah Al Rakib. Ganguly and Gopal both earned 9 points each after end of the 11th or last round games. Play-off match broke their tie by Rapid Chess format. Ganguly beat Gopal by 2-0 points in the play-off match. Ganguly is qualified for the 1st round of the World Cup Chess Championship, which will be held in Siberia in November. Indian G. Rohit became 3rd with 8 points. Gopal achieved an 11 games Grandmaster norm and Rohit achieved 9 games grandmaster norm from this event and it’s the 3rd or last norm for both players. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy of India became 4th with 7 points, International Master Enamul Hossain Razib became 5th with 6 points, IM Abdullah Al Rakib became 6th with 5½, GM Reefat Bin Sattar became 7th with 5½ points, FM Kh. Aminul Islam became 8th with 4½ points, Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan became 9th with 4½ points, IM Suvrajit Saha became 10th with 3½ points, Athula Russell became 11th with 2 points and Shrestha Keshav of Nepal became 12th with 1½ points. In the last round games: Deepan beat Russell, Rohit beat Kh. Amin, Tunveer beat Suvrajit and Razib drew with Reefat. Women Grandmaster D. Harika of India became champion in the women section with 7 points and WGM Swathi Ghate of India became runner-up with 6 points. The prize Distribution was held yesterday (Friday) at the same venue. Honorable Adviser Ministry of the Youth and Sport Mr. Tapan Chowdhury distributed prizes among the winners. Mr. Md. Abdus Salam Khan, President of Bangladesh Chess Federation and Secretary of the Ministry of Establishment of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh was presided the ceremony. Mr. Ilyus Ahmed , Managing Director of Sadharan Bima Corporation and Mr. Abdul Hayee, Vice President and Country Manager of Habib Bank Limited were present as special guests. Mr. Jamilur Rahman, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation gave address. Total Five thousand us dollars were given to the winners as prize money. Champion Ganguly and Runner-up Gopal got eight hundred fifty US dollars each. Rohit got five hundred dollars, Deepan got three hundred, Razib, Rakib and Reefat got two hundred dollars each, Amin and Tunveer got one hundred dollars each. In the Women section Champion Harika got six hundred dollars, Swathi got four hundred dollars, Tania got three hundred fifty dollars, Rani Hamid got two hundred fifty dollars and Shirin got one hundred fifty dollars. 12 players from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh including 3 grandmasters, 4 International Masters and 1 FIDE Master participated in the Men section and 5 players including 3 women grandmasters from India and 2 players from Bangladesh participated in the Women section.

Gopal has achieved 10 games Grandmaster norm and Rohit 9 games grandmaster norm from this event. These are 3rd and last norm for the both players. 10th round games were held yesterday (Thursday). In the 10th round games Gopal beat Rohit and Ganguly beat IM Suvrajit Saha. All 4 Bangladeshi players won their 10th round games. IM Enamul Hossain Razib beat Indian Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy, GM Reefat Bin Sattar beat Shrestha Keshav of Nepal, FM Kh. Aminul Islam beat Tunveer Gillani of Pakistan and IM Abdullah Al Rakib beat Russell M.K.A. of Sri Lanka. Women Grandmaster D. Harika of India became champion in the women section with 7 points and WGM Swathi Ghate of India became runner-up with 6 points. WGM Tania Sachdev of India became 3rd with 5.5 points, IWM Rani Hamid became 4th with 3 points and Sharmin Sultana Shirin became 5th with 0.5 points.
10th or last round games of women section were held Wednesday. In the last round Harika beat Swathi and Tania beat Rani Hamid. Points after 10th round in the Men Section: 8-Ganguly, Gopal, 7-Rohit, 6-Deepan, 5½-Rakib, Razib & Reefat, 4½-Amin, 3½-Tunveer & Suvrajit, 2-Russell and 1½- Keshav. 11th or last round games of the Men section will start today (Friday) from 10:00 AM at the same venue. GM Zia & FM Parag in Malaysian Open

GM Ziaur Rahman became 3rd in the 4th Dato Arthur Tan Malaysia Open chess.He has earned 8 points after end of the 11th or last round.FM Mehedi Hasan Parag became54th.In last round game Zia drew with Li Chao,Parag lost against Kojima, Shinya.LI Chao became champion with 9 points.

Razib gets his second GM norm

17 Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, Master Tournament-2007

IM Enamul Hossain Razib achieved his 2nd grandmaster norm from the Master Tournament of the 17th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival held in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. Razib earned 6 points out of 9 games and got 9 round grandmaster norm. He achieved his 1st grandmaster norm from 35th Chess Olympiad 2002 at Slovenia. Razib became 10th and got five hundred US dollars as prize money. In the last round Razib beat IM Mahjoob Morteja of Iran to achieve the norm . GM Amin Bashem of Egypt became champion with 7 points and GM Ashot Anastasian from Armenia became runner-up with same points. Total 70 players from 22 countries including 23 grandmasters & 11 International Masters participated in the event.

Zone 3.2 Men`s and Women`s Championships

The Bangladesh Chess Federation, on behalf of the Zonal President, has the honor to invite all National Chess Federations of Zone 3.2 to participate in the Asian Zonal Championship 2007 for Men and Women organized by the Bangladesh Chess Federation from 23 to 31 August 2007 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The champion will qualify to the FIDE World Cup.
